Description

This new installation by acclaimed San Francisco-based artist Jim Campbell explodes the moving image into three dimensions, illuminating the Haas Atrium with a flickering grid of light that is part sculpture, part cinematic screen. Campbell's technically sophisticated artworks often push the lower limits of image resolution and reduction to explore the nuances of perceptual experience. Exploded View uses hundreds of computer-controlled LED lights to create the illusion of fleeting shadowlike figures. These filmic images dissolve and resolve as you move around and under the suspended matrix of bulbs, or view the piece at a distance from the vantage points of the landings. Campbell's evocative work blurs the boundaries between image and object, abstraction and representation.
